Traditional Braces

Close up of smiling woman with metal bracesTraditional braces are perhaps the most common type of orthodontic treatment. At Dr. Angela Wandera & Associates, we specialize in traditional braces, as well as some other straightening appliances. If you or your child needs orthodontic treatment, we can help you determine which orthodontic appliance is most appropriate.

Who Needs Traditional Braces?

Traditional braces consist of metal brackets, which are attached to a thin wire using a series of elastic bands. During treatment, we tighten the wire to put pressure on the teeth, causing them to slowly move to a more proper position. This system can be used to correct crowded teeth, crooked teeth, or a malocclusion (misaligned bite).

Many of these issues can worsen over time, resulting in severe complications for your oral health. Some of these complications include:
•  Dental caries (tooth decay)
•  Gum disease
•  Temporomandibular joint disorders (TMJ/TMD)
•  Tooth loss
•  Problems chewing or speaking
•  Severely worn down teeth

Straightening your teeth can give you a more beautiful smile and prevent many of these complications. During a consultation appointment, Dr. Angela Wandera will perform a diagnostic exam to determine if you or your child need orthodontic treatment.

Caring for Your Traditional Braces

It is very important to maintain good oral hygiene during orthodontic treatment. The brackets of traditional braces are bonded to the front surfaces of your teeth, making it a bit of challenge to properly clean these areas. The wire that connects the brackets can also make it more difficult to floss.

To prevent plaque and tartar from collecting around the brackets, pay special attention to these areas while brushing. Be sure to use an ADA-approved toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste. We may also provide you with a special type of floss that is easier to thread between your teeth and the wire. For added protection, you may want to consider an anti-bacterial mouth rinse.

Advantages of Traditional Braces

Traditional braces are still used in modern orthodontics because they are often the most effective way to treat extreme overcrowding and malocclusions. When compared to other appliances, they give us greater control over the incremental movement of certain teeth. Traditional braces are also one of the most cost-effective treatments available today.

Some patients are concerned with the aesthetics of their appliance. While clear aligner trays and lingual braces are more aesthetically pleasing, they are usually less effective options for complicated problems. Modern braces are also more visually appealing than ever before due to smaller brackets and thinner wires.

Life After Traditional Braces

Once your teeth are in the proper position, it is important to protect your investment. Unfortunately, your teeth can shift back out of alignment over time. Wearing a retainer following your treatment can prevent this problem from occurring.

We offer a few different retainers depending on your preferences. Many patients choose a clear plastic retainer similar to aligner trays. Others use a more traditional appliance made from acrylic and a thin metal wire.
